Today is the birthday of Nat King Cole, who left us too soon… he was only 45 when he died of lung cancer in 1965. He smoked three packs of Kools a day.
Cole was simply one of the best singers ever. Here’s a sampling.
Marian Anderson was denied the right to perform at Constitution Hall by the DAR because of her color. Instead, at the urging of Eleanor Roosevelt, Interior Secy. Harold Ickes permitted Anderson to perform at the Lincoln Memorial. April 9, 1939, a seminal day in the Civil Rights movement.
No, darlings, it’s not Turban Tuesday, it’s Friday Face, and it’s opera legend Leontyne Price’s 85th birthday! And before you say you hate opera, listen to this.
Here, she sings Gershwin for President Carter at the White House in 1978.
And here, as Aida, from a television program in 1963.
Among her many honors: the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1964), the Kennedy Center Honors (1980), the National Medal of Arts (1985), numerous honorary degrees, nineteen Grammy Awards (13 for operatic or song recitals, five for full operas) and a special Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989 — more than any other classical singer.
In October 2008, she was one of the recipients of the first Opera Honors given by the National Endowment for the Arts.
A star since her debut in 1952, Leontyne Price is today’s Friday Face.
“I usually don’t talk about stuff like this on my show, but I really want to thank everyone who’s supporting me. And if you don’t know me very well, if you’re just watching maybe for the first time, or you’re just getting to know me, I wanna be clear — and here are the values that I stand for: I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated, and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values. That’s what I stand for. “
No, that’s not LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian in 2052… that’s LeAnn and Sly Stallone… I mean Arnold and Sly.
Arnold posted this picture saying that the two ran into each other on the way to shoulder surgery, much the same way his dick accidentally ran into the maid.
Nick Nolte (left) as seen yesterday at the Academy Award nominees’ luncheon (he’s up for Best Supporting Actor for “Warrior”), and film great Walter Huston as Howard in “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.”
