in lookalikes, oddities, old people, sorry -- had toNo, this isn’t some tanning parlor accident in New Jersey.
These are Shiite Muslims beating themselves silly in the wacky ritual of Ashura, as seen at the Karbala mosque. They’re beating themselves over the killing of Imam Hussein, grandson of Prophet Mohammed… in the 7th century.
In Yiddish, this is called “mishagoyim.”

in can you believe it?, oddities, religion, whateverHere’s an unlikely duo… Betty Deuce ran into Yoko Ono at the Museum of Liverpool. Imagine that.
Betty is 85, Yoko is 78.

in oddities, royalsHere’s an idea for a great new comedy film! Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall co-starring with Mr. Bean! But I don’t know if the Teamsters would handle her hair.
That was the scene yesterday when Rowan Atkinson and Cam appeared together for the opening of the new Shulman Auditorium at The Queen’s college 2011 in Oxford. Camilla’s dainty mitt is carrying a purse that appears to be from a 1975 Sears catalog. Her hands are as dainty as a pickaxe.
She’s also resurrected her favorite purple and green plaid, which is always a lovely complement to an ill-fitting blouse borrowed from my high school English teacher, Miss Chambers.
Hollywood, please cast these two!

in bad hair, fabulosity, oddities, royalsChexydecimal Studio City Bureau Chief Andy (also former London Bureau Chief) spotted the catastrophic lamp (I think it’s a lamp) at the Pasadena City College Flea Market this morning. It might have been owned by Andy’s favorite drag queen, Isolde Thandirt. But I doubt it.
If you’re going for the Retrocious look, this mess is for you.
The shade is a lullaby of something someone once thought was a good idea. Imagine it lit. Just don’t eat first.
The base, which I suppose could be said has a sub-Saharan feel to it, includes plenty of nooks and crannies for dust to gather, or for adding smaller decorative items.

in art, can you believe it?, everyday objects, hideousness, horror, london bureau chief andy, oddities, oh the horror, pearl clutch, unfortunateHer Majesty is clearly not interested in these Aboriginal dancers, as seen during Betty’s visit to Clontarf Aboriginal college on Thursday in Perth.
Then they gave her a football. Clearly her first time holding one.
She was tackled.

in can you believe it?, dancing with the stars, i have no idea, oddities, pearl clutch, royalsNo electronic voices, nothing overdubbed… everyone playing at the same time. What a novelty! Duke Ellington… all aboard!
Madeleine Peyroux… mashed with Eleanor Powell’s dancing. Love this.
Every few months, I need to hear this. Imagine opening your mouth and being able to make these sounds. If you don’t get chills at the end, well, you don’t.
Zsa Zsa Gabor… and friends.

in 1930, bad hair, chexy's saturday matinee, music, oddities, stuff I likeMy imaginary daughter Amy, 6, wants me to be First Lady Michelle Obama for Halloween. “I can just hold your hand and be one of the fat kids she’s trying to put on a diet!” said my overweight angel, adding, “You could carry bags from Target!”
I wondered what other First Lady masks were available.
What about the Laura Bush mask? But for the hairdo, she looks like a surgified Real Housewife.
Hillary Clinton looks something like an illustration of a 1950s housewife selling toothpaste.
The real Barbara Bush is far more frightening than this latex version, although if you add an ax and a bloody Talbots dress, this could be good.
