Woman Climbs Mt. Everest at Age 73

by Chexy on May 20, 2012

Tamae Watanabe has reached the summit of Mt. Everest at age 73, the second time she has done it. She was the oldest woman to accomplish the insane feat at age 63, now besting her own record.

Today, at 39, I’m going to try making it to the end of the Long Beach Flea Market.

Shut up, Kevin.

Duchess of Alba: Craftwork

by Chexy on April 24, 2012

No, Hello Kitty has not been in an accident at a Michaels arts and crafts store. That’s the Duchess of Alba, looking like the abuelita of one of Santa’s elves, if Santa lived in Fresno.

La Duquesa appeared at a gala in Spain wearing this diverse assemblage of atrociousness, somehow making it all work! How does she do it? Que fabulosa!

I think the purse really makes it.

Cayetana and Sharon Needles: Hot Bitches

by Chexy on April 10, 2012

That grand lady of Spain, the Duchess of Alba, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, brought her loveliness to the “Orange and Lemon” in Madrid, where they honor the nice and unpleasant celebs.

Europa Press captured this moment of sheer beauty as the Duchess’ dewy makeup reflected in the purple light of a spring night in Spain (apologies to Cole Porter).

In seemingly unrelated beauty news, Sharon Needles won last night’s “Drag Race” Bitch Ball challenge.

The Duchess is 86 (No, not Camilla, silly!)

by Chexy on March 28, 2012

That fluffy-haired goddess from Seville, the Duquesa de Alba (fancy) turns 86 today, and as you can see by the above photo taken last night, she doesn’t look a minute over 85. There’s a certain feline quality about her in this picture… yes, she looks like an 18-year-old Persian cat.

Appearing with Antonio Banderas to accept the “Mantilla of the Year” award (for real), the Duchess showed signs of the difficult winter she has endured since her October marriage to Duke Alfie, seen here holding her up. She’s had bronchitis and other ailments for months.

The squadron of uniformed boy soldiers is there in case of an emergency. They follow her everywhere.

Friday Face: Natalie Schafer

by Chexy on March 16, 2012

Today’s Friday Face is the adorably dotty Natalie Schafer, seen here in the role of her career as the fluffy millionaire’s wife Lovey Howell (real name: Eunice Wentworth Howell) on “Gilligan’s Island.” She played the role for three years (1964-67), and for an eternity in reruns.

Natalie was born November 5, 1900 to a Jewish family in Red Bank, New Jersey, a stone’s throw from Broadway… where she made her debut in 1927′s “Trigger,” directed by none other than George Cukor. She typically played a sophisticated woman, and would continue to do so in over 80 films, beginning in 1941 with her move to Los Angeles.

She had some terribly interesting romances, including a 9-year marriage to excellent character actor Louis Calhern (above), best remembered opposite Marilyn Monroe in “The Asphalt Jungle.” All four of his marriages (Nat was his 3rd) ended in divorce.

She was engaged to character actor Charles Butterworth (above) when he was killed in a one-car accident in 1946.

Natalie had a long romance during the late 1940s and early ’50s with brilliant playwright and humorist George S. Kaufman (above), who worked with the Marx Brothers, and wrote the divine “You Can’t Take It with You” (with Moss Hart, Kitty Carlisle’s husband).

Here she is in an episode of Lucy that I love… because Lucy and Ethel are in drag, and Ricky and Fred, too. Natalie runs the charm school.

Schafer shaved 10 years off her age, and even her best friends were unaware of her real age until her death of cancer at 90, when it was revealed. She died at her 7-bedroom home on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Her ashes were scattered in the sea near San Pedro, California.

Below, one of her last public appearances at the APLA (AIDS Project Los Angeles) benefit in September of 1990. She died April 10, 1991.

By all accounts a witty and delightful woman, Natalie invested wisely in real estate, reportedly leaving the bulk of her estate to her poodle, and to co-star Dawn Wells (“Mary Ann”), who has never confirmed it.

Schafer left $2 million to the Motion Picture and Television Hospital, which named a wing for her.

For her glamour, sophistication, talent and style, Natalie Schafer is today’s Friday Face.

When you have time, here’s the 1947 film “Dishonored Lady” in which she appeared opposite the marvelous Hedy Lamarr (great scene at 48:48). She could wear a hat.

Camilla, Betty and Kate Have a Tea Party

by Chexy on March 1, 2012

Queen Elizabeth II, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge visit Fortnum and Mason

Here’s a gorgeous way to start your day — with a photo of the great barge of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, as seen on her arrival to a Fortnum and Mason store in London for a private tour and tea with her mother-in-law, Betty Deuce, and stepdaughter-in-law, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

As you can see, Camilla’s hair was freshly burnished for the event (royal stylists, assorted butlers and metalworkers use a combination of Bar Keepers Friend and Goo Gone to keep it looking so fresh and shiny).

Betty and the girls were met by protestors against the sale of foie gras (that’s goose liver, for you heathens out there), and the only reason anyone would protest that is if they have never eaten it, because once you have, you just don’t care how they get it. Just kidding, animal lovers. It’s an abomination. And delicious. Send your cards and letters to Fortnum and Mason.
The girls enjoyed a tea party in the store with 150 guests. As part of the visit, 15,000 troops will receive a commemorative tin with Queen Anne tea and digestive biscuits.

Kate wore an appropriately tweedy coat dress by Missoni Rex, and dutifully followed Tugboat Annie Camilla and Gran into the store. Betty clearly wants Kate to get some royal training from the expert, herself, as Kate will one day be Queen. Is she wearing stockings?

Duchess of Cambridge and Boris Johnson at Fortnum and Mason

Kate charmed Mayor Boris Johnson, who clearly looks like he’d like to get to know her better. A lot better.

Betty wore this lovely light blue outfit with a bolero hat and sexy skirt, revealing just a hint of leg, and her usual sensible heels, seen here as she greeted the homosexuals who painted the charming pedestal behind her.
