Chexy’s Saturday Matinee

by Chexy on November 19, 2011

Are you ready for the next Roaring Twenties?

President Kennedy was killed 48 years ago, November 22, 1963. Here’s Jack losing his temper over… well, just listen. It’s a side of JFK you’ve likely never heard.

Marvin Gaye… gone too soon. The most moving rendition of the National Anthem, ever.

Joni Mitchell… timeless.

Let’s kick it off with some Jane Russell hotness.

Susan Hayward walks… the drunken binge scene from “Smash Up,” love that movie.

Lena Horne’s moment.

How Disney cartoons are made. Wouldn’t you like to hear your life narrated by this voice?

Chexy’s Saturday Matinee

by Chexy on October 1, 2011

It’s all Ella and friends today! Let’s kick it off with two of the greatest singing stars that ever lived; Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, seen here at the top of their game, singin’ it LIVE. I smiled the whole time I watched this.

Another great with Ella, Dean Martin. This is what used to be on television before everything turned to shit.

Two of the prettiest voices… Karen Carpenter and Ella Fitzgerald. 1980.

And let’s kick it out with Nat King Cole and Ella with some revised Cole Porter.

September 12, 1953

by Chexy on September 12, 2011

Jacqueline Bouvier and John Fitzgerald Kennedy were married on this day in 1953. The bride was 24, the future President was 36. The ceremony was held at St. Mary’s Church in Newport, Rhode Island. Jackie wore an ivory silk taffeta gown created by Anne Lowe, an African-American designer from Alabama — the dress required 50 yards of taffeta and took Lowe two months to make.

The dress is now on display at the Kennedy Library in Boston.

Jackie carried a bouquet of white and pink orchids with gardenias. The church was decorated with pink gladioli and white chrysanthemums.

The 800 guests at the ceremony swelled to 1,200 for the reception, held at Jackie’s stepfather’s estate, Hammersmith Farm. The receiving line took two hours.

Their first night as husband and wife was spent at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, after which they departed for a two-week honeymoon in Acapulco, where Jack caught a ten-ft. sailfish that would later decorate a wall in the White House.

They had a little over 10 years together.

Chexyland

From the gorgeous blog of Shorpy, his 1965 photo of Disneyland’s Tomorrowland and its glam rockets, from a glorious Kodachrome slide.

Photographed from the late lamented Skyway gondola, which disappeared in 1994. (Click the pic for a super-ginormous view.)
