My cousin sent me this cool video made from sequenced images from NASA’s Cassini and Voyager missions.

Remember, you’re a speck in the universe. Especially you.

Turban Tuesday: Sabu

by Chexy on February 7, 2012

Imagine that you are born in 1924, in the tiny town of Mysore, India, where your father is an elephant driver for the Maharajah… then your father dies when you are just 9, and a location crew discovers you at 12, and they take you to England to star in 1937′s “Elephant Boy,” and by the early 1940s, you are one of the highest-paid stars in Hollywood! That’s how it was for Sabu!

He was placed under contract by filmmaker Alexander Korda, with whom he made numerous pictures. He was nearly 20 by the time he became a US citizen, and he enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1944, becoming a tail gunner. He earned a Distinguished Service Cross and other medals.

Sabu married his co-star from “Song of India,” actress Marilyn Cooper, and had two children, Paul and Jasmine. Below is a comic book that is now quite valuable.

His real name was Selar Shaik Sabu. He starred in the memorable “Thief of Baghdad” with its dazzling special effects, and “Jungle Boy.”

Sabu dropped dead of a heart attack at age 39 at his home in Chatsworth, Calif. on December 2, 1963, 11 days after President Kennedy was killed.  Sabu’s widow said he underwent a complete physical just a few days before he died. His doctor said, “If all my patients were as healthy as you, I’d be out of business.”

His son, Paul Sabu, became a successful songwriter. His daughter, Jasmine, became a noted horse trainer. She died at age 44 in 2001.

Sabu is resting at Forest Lawn.

Camilla Transformed!

by Chexy on November 28, 2011

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall must be reading Chexydecimal, because she’s really been spruced up — and looks… dare I say? Like a Princess!

Or some old queen in drag.

But here’s our darling duchess, finally wearing a brassiere that lifts and congregates her royal bosom, she’s well tucked and Spanxed in a lovely, sparkly dress that offsets her serpentine necklace, diamond clips, and lizard-like lusciousness. And her hair actually looks like it won’t harm anyone!

This is the best Camilla has looked in years, as seen at the the royal film premiere of Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo in 3D.”

Chexyland

From the gorgeous blog of Shorpy, his 1965 photo of Disneyland’s Tomorrowland and its glam rockets, from a glorious Kodachrome slide.

Photographed from the late lamented Skyway gondola, which disappeared in 1994. (Click the pic for a super-ginormous view.)

Behold, The Magic 8-Ball

by Chexy on August 3, 2011

Mattel’s Magic 8 Ball, that fascinating decision maker for the “I don’t know” crowd (you know who you are). What’s inside, you ask? Signs point to me telling you.

Inside that little black sphere is an icosahedron… here’s a nice rotating one. And no, Tippi Icosahedron was not in “The Birds.” (Sorry, Morgan.)

There are, you math whizzes know, 20 possible answers inside the ball…

● It is certain
● It is decidedly so
● Without a doubt
● Yes – definitely
● You may rely on it

● As I see it, yes
● Most likely
● Outlook good
● Signs point to yes
● Yes

● Reply hazy, try again
● Ask again later
● Better not tell you now
● Cannot predict now
● Concentrate and ask again

● Don’t count on it
● My reply is no
● My sources say no
● Outlook not so good
● Very doubtful

I would like to add my own 20 answers to a Magic 8-Ball, inspired by my sage grandmother, who had all the answers:

  • Why you asking me?
  • Do I bother you with such nonsense?
  • You think I know?
  • Yeah, sure, if you think so.
  • You really want my answer?
  • Ich vais nisht!
  • You need to ask?
  • Go know!
  • I have no idea.
  • You already know the answer.
  • Sit down until you know.
  • You really want an answer from a plastic ball?
  • I never thought about it.
  • Ask him!
  • Ask her!
  • Why ask?!
  • If you have to ask…
  • Seriously, you’re a putz.
  • I’m not in the mood for your questions.
  • Why?

The 8-Ball, as we know it now, was created in 1950. But the original gizmo was invented by one Albert C. Carter, who based the original design on one his clairvoyant mother used. Then a guy named Max Levinson and his brother-in-law Abe Bookman partnered with Alabe Crafts in 1946, and they sold it as the Syco-Seer. Not a good name, although they had it inside a glitzy crystal ball. Brunswick Billiards turned it into the 8 ball in 1950. Mattel somehow got a hold of it.
